Additional highlights of 2022-2023 performance achievements of Bristol public schools

By Jack Krampitz

Last week, TBE wrote of the impressive improvements in standardized test scores in elementary math and reading from the pre-Covid year of 2019 to the 2023 results. Bristol outperformed all the other school districts in their Designated Reference Group (DRG) and even showed more improvement than many school districts in higher socio-economic groups.

There are actually many other accolades that Bristol schools earned in the last school year.

Here are some of the highlights:

Three schools named ‘Connecticut Schools of Distinction’

On Nov. 1, 2023, the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) released results from the 2022-2023 Next Generation Accountability System, a system where districts and schools earn points on a broad set of 12 indicators.

This system moves beyond test scores and graduation rates to provide a more holistic perspective of district and school performance. Three of our Bristol Public Schools — Ivy Drive, Mountain View and South Side — were named “Connecticut Schools of Distinction.”

Ivy Drive School

-High Performance and High Growth (All Students) – ELA and Math

-1 of only 30 Level 1 schools in Connecticut

Mountain View School

-High Growth (High Needs Students) – Math

South Side School

-High Growth (High Needs Students) – ELA

On the state level

Additionally, Bristol Public Schools outperformed the state in the following categories:

-Overall Accountability Index

-ELA Growth (All Students)

-Math Growth (All Students)

-Preparation for College and Career Readiness

-On-track High School Graduation

-Arts Access

ELA achievement & growth

-Chippens Hill and Northeast middle schools outperformed the average for the State of Connecticut performance.

-Greene-Hills outperformed their last two years of collected achievement (2018-2019, 2020-2021), surpassing pre-pandemic achievement levels.

-All of Bristol’s elementary schools (Edgewood, Hubbell, Ivy Drive, Mountain View, South Side, Stafford) exceeded the average for the State of Connecticut performance.

-Four elementary schools (Hubbell, Ivy Drive, South Side, Stafford) had performance that surpassed pre-pandemic achievement levels.

-All of Bristol’s K-8 and middle schools recorded higher growth rates and average percentage targets achieved than the average for the State of Connecticut.

-Three elementary schools (Hubbell, Mountain View, South Side) recorded higher growth rates and average percentage targets achieved than the average for the State of Connecticut.

-Ivy Drive recorded its highest growth rates and average percentage targets achieved since 2015-2016.

Math achievement

-Chippens Hill and Greene-Hills outperformed their last two years of collected achievement (2018-2019, 2020-2021), surpassing pre-pandemic achievement levels.

-All of the elementary schools (Edgewood, Hubbell, Ivy Drive, Mountain View, South Side, Stafford) exceeded the average for the State of Connecticut performance.

-Grade 6 in all of the middle schools (Chippens Hill, Northeast, Greene-Hills, West Bristol) exceeded the average for the State of Connecticut performance.

Overall, Bristol schools weathered the storm of COVID-19 school closings and restrictions, rebounding from a tough two-year period for students and teachers to rise above the results of all the districts in their DRG, and even surpassing the results of more economically advantaged communities in multiple categories.

All TBE readers, supporters and donors

The Bristol Edition will be limiting the number of stories non-members and free readers may access each week. This decision is based on our financial projections and, most certainly, to remind people that TBE is serious about providing accurate, timely and thorough reporting for Bristol. To do this we have devised a financial support structure that makes unlimited access extremely affordable, beginning with a $6 monthly donation.

  • Non-members will be able to access four (4) articles per week.
  • Free readers and people who have subscribed by email will be able to access four (4) articles per week.
  • Donors and financial supporters will have unlimited access as long as they log in.

Note: Donors may have to contact TBE if they find they are being limited, since we will need to set up a membership account for you. Email editor@bristoledition.org for instructions. Sorry for any inconvenience. People with financial difficulties may write editor@bristoledition.org to be considered for free access.
