Baseball

Torrington scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, breaking a 3-3 tie, and went on to defeat the Bristol Eastern baseball team 4-3 on Saturday, in a game played at Fuessenich Park in Torrington.

Torrington took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second off Eastern starter Anthony Nocera.  Nocera walked Jack McCoy to start the inning, and with one out, Yadiel Santana slammed a two-run homer over the left field fence.

The Lancers tied the game in the top of the third.  A  leadoff walk to Eli Brown, followed by a single to right off the bat of Caleb Molinsky put two runners on base.  With one out, Brayden Schenck walked to load the bases.  Brown then scored on a wild pitch, and Preston Guarda’s infield single to deep short scored Molinsky with the second run, tying the game at 2-2.

Torrington took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third.  A leadoff walk to Dom Dibecelle, followed by a pop-fly single to left put runners on first and third with no outs.  Dibecelle scored as Eastern turned a 4-6-3 double play.

The Lancers tied the game in the top of the fourth.  Owen Myers reached first on an infield error to start the inning.  Nocera followed with a single to right center.   Eli Brown reached on a bunt single to load the bases with no outs.  Myers scored on a fly ball to right tying the game at 3-3.

Jonny Montgomery relieved Nocera to start the fourth, retiring the side in order in the fourth. In the fifth, Montgomery walked the leadoff batter( who was then cut down trying to steal second)  and retired the next two batters, with the game still tied at 3-3 after five innings.

In the Eastern sixth, three walks loaded the bases, but the Lancers failed to score.

In the bottom of the sixth, Will Parkhouse opened the inning with a double to deep right. Parkhouse was sacrificed to third, and Santana then singled to left to score the deciding run.

Eastern’s hitting woes continued for the early season, as they had only five hits in the game, all singles, and none after the fourth inning.

Torrington improves to 3-2 on the season, while Eastern is still seeking their first win of the season, and is now 0-4.

The Lancers travel to Storrs today for a 3:45 game against E.O. Smith at Farrell Field Park.

  • Free readers and people who have subscribed by email will be able to access four (4) articles per week.
  • Donors and financial supporters will have unlimited access as long as they log in.

Note: Donors may have to contact TBE if they find they are being limited, since we will need to set up a membership account for you. Email editor@bristoledition.org for instructions. Sorry for any inconvenience. People with financial difficulties may write editor@bristoledition.org to be considered for free access.
